Tests were conducted in laboratory animals and have shown that the drug could reduce body weight by a quarter and its fat content to 42 percent after seven days.

After a month, the weight of mice was reduced by 28 percent of their fat mass and 63 percent overall, however, experts warned it could take several years for potential medicine use is reached in patients.

But they say the findings suggest a new approach to treating obesity and diabetes in adults because the medicine is an artificial hormone that regulates glucose metabolism.
