Encourage Children To Eat Vegetables
Food and vegetable consumption is an important component of a healthy diet, as one of the major food groups, vegetables provide fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, motivating children to increase their intake of this food group is often a challenge. We offer a few tips for parents.
Many parents know that their children can become tedious and difficult to eat, many do not like the vegetables and turn it into a meal of struggles. Given that food preferences of children may determine their future eating habits, it is important to recognize that these food preferences can be formed.
How food preferences are formed in children
Children have a natural predisposition for sweet, and do not like bitter foods or amari.1-3 In particular, the taste preferences of newborns also appear to be affected by what the mother eats during pregnancy and lactation. In one study, infants of mothers who had consumed carrot juice regularly during their pregnancy or lactation showed less negative facial expressions when they were fed with carrot-flavored cereal compared with cereals normali.
